Traveling to Natchez

Created using GoogleEarth. This map focuses on Lorenzo's journey in 1804 from New York to Natchez in the newly claimed territory of Mississippi.

In order to show that Lorenzo's path through Virginia was somewhat unusual, this slide reveals the path Lorenzo took at the end of 1804 when he embarked on trip to Natchez, Mississippi. Again, the map would greatly benefit from additional information regarding population density and religious affiliations of those in this area. However, this map provides an informative point of contrast with those of Virginia. While Lorenzo's travels through Virginia were guided by an evangelizing mission, the trip pictured here had a particular destination. And although Lorenzo did engage in preaching appointments along the way, the progression of the stops is much more linear than his travels in Virginia. As he is capable of relatively direct travel, this map supports the claim that Lorenzo's more sporatic itinerant path through Virginia was intentional and so can provide us with useful information.
