Mapping Lorenzo's Travels

Locations that Lorenzo stopped while itinerating around the United States in 1803-1804.

To say that Lorenzo travelled widely is an understatement. His life was spent traveling from preaching engagement to preaching engagement and he relied largely on the benevolence of others for his support. During this period, Lorenzo focused much of his attention on the state of Virginia, traveling across the state from west to east. However, the information from his travels along is not enough to determine the relationship between the areas he focused on or where he was most successful and the frontier.

This map is a picture of some of the place Lorenzo stopped and preached during a one year period. The map should be viewed from South to North, as the information picks up while Lorenzo is in Georgia and traces his journey north. Also, the points to the far west designate a journey at the end of 1804 from New York to Natchez, Mississippi, a journey separate from his preaching along the east coast.

For my initial attempt to display the data I collected, I used ViewShare, which is a new service being developed by the Library of Congress. The initial view gives a sense of the expansiveness of Lorenzo's travels. Because I was not able to gather lattitude and longitude information for all of Lorenzo's 200 stops during the year, a number of points are not displayed on the map. However, it does provide an easy overview of the data.

While the data uploaded into viewshare and displayed easily, the site gave few options for layering information. Also, although a "sharelink" was provided (and is included in the item metadata), I was unable to determine how to export the map.
